Parts of Wikipedia offline after a 'malicious' attack

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The popular Wikipedia online reference website has fallen in several countries after being attacked by what he described as a "malicious attack".

The server of the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the site, has suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, "said the organization's German account in a tweet Friday night.

In a separate statement, the Wikimedia Foundation said the attack on the encyclopedia, one of the world's most popular websites, was "under way" and the teams were working on restoring access.

DDoS attacks often involve legions of zombie computers, machines infected with viruses and with the order to simultaneously visit a website.

A massive avalanche of requests can overwhelm IT servers on the Web site, slow down the service or take them offline.

Wikimedia condemned the violation of its server and said it threatened "everyone's fundamental rights to freely access and share information".

Similar cyber attacks have affected other popular Internet domains such as Twitter, Facebook and Google in recent years.
